No Main Characters is an erotic, LGBTQ+ magazine that features sexy short stories following different themes and premises. It’s currently run by two people, Junker (Jackson) and honeywhine (Mel Honeywitt). Both of us focus on writing original content, so you may not have found our works before. We both love reading about people’s OCs and story ideas, and we often dig through Smashwords’ LGBT section to try to find new, fun reads. When Junker realized he had a little extra money in his budget, we decided to try this out to find other authors like us, help other people find these authors too, and obviously pay these authors for their efforts.
While we are focussed on LGBTQ+ characters, we also look for characters with racial diversity, body diversity, and disabilities and that these characters are written well and respectfully. Our Call for Submissions serve mainly as writing prompts for writers, and we will be archiving old prompts so people can still use them for ideas. We will not be accepting submissions off-theme for some time while we get our footing and maintain our finances.
Our launch date is now December 2019 and we update quarterly on this schedule. We will work our an update schedule based on the number of submissions we receive, but we hope to release submissions throughout the quarter rather than reveal them all at once. You can follow us on Twitter, Tumblr, or PillowFort to get updates.
Each short story will have information about the author, links to where to find more of their works, and ideally a tip jar so the author can be tipped for their work on top of the payment they receive from us. We want the site to offer a leg-up for authors, especially self-published authors and authors just starting out. While we will not be featuring our own works directly on the website anytime soon, we will be adding PWYW short stories to Smashwords, slap up a link in the sidebar, and use their sales (if any) to put more money towards this project. We hope to use this money to pay more for accepted submissions and to help cover costs of the website itself.
During our first run of accepting submissions, we did not receive enough short stories. So while we’re still gaining traction, we may commission authors for short stories to fill out our submissions. None of these stories will be taking the place of a submission, they’re simply to add a few more short stories to the submissions we already have. We’re hoping to ultimately move to submissions only since it will give us a larger variety of authors and give more opportunities for less known authors to pop up here.
We both have big dreams for what we can do with No Main Characters, but we want to focus on planting roots and getting established first. Our focus may narrow or shift depending on what people submit and like to read, and we may tweak out guidelines as we develop. We are not planning to accept novel-length submissions in the near future because we cannot afford the promotion these novels deserve. We do eventually hope to include promotions for self-published LGBTQ+ novels when we have an audience, and we’re still deciding how to best include it in the website. We may offer self-publishing tips if there are those interested. We hope to eventually feature articles about writing kinks and sex, self-publishing erotica, and more!
