Here is some basic information about submitting to No Main Characters. We’re just a couple of people, so feel free to ask us any questions and we will respond to you and update this page to make it as clear as possible.
For an accepted submission, you will receive $25 USD for the non-exclusive right to display your submission here on this website (https://www.nomaincharacters.com/) for at least two years from when it is first displayed on the site.
Rights & Ownership
If your submission is accepted, you will retain the rights to your short story, so you can submit it to other anthologies or publish it yourself. You give us the right to display your submission here on this website (https://www.nomaincharacters.com/) for at least two years from when it is first displayed on the site. If you would like your story removed after the two year period, please contact us at any point and we will either schedule it for removal or remove it immediately, depending on when the request is made. Otherwise we will leave your submission up until you request otherwise.
How is my Submission Displayed?
If accepted, your submission is displayed as a post on the website. At the bottom of the post, you have an author box where you can put your name/pen name, links to where else we can find you, a short description about you, and some method of tip jar. We’re still working out how to best display a tip jar, but we encourage you to put a tip jar on your short story.
Author Information Updates
If you have an accepted submission and want to update any of the details in your author box please feel free to reach out to us and we will update your information ASAP.
Anthologies and Future Works
We will not be using your submission for anything other than displaying it on the website. In the event that we want to make an anthology that includes your submission, we will reach out to you and discuss compensation, rights, and so on. You are in no way obligated to accept what we propose so you are free to decline.
What happens if I submit and I’m not accepted?
If your submission is not accepted, you will obviously retain the rights to your short story and you can submit it to any other places you desire. We will not share any part of your short story or divulge aspects of it to anyone else. We do not share submissions with anyone.
What happens if I submit and I am accepted?
If we are interested in your short story, we will reply with an edited version of your story through GoogleDocs. If you accept these proposed changes (the edits), then we will accept your work, give you an ETA for when it will be published on the site, and pay you. The proposed changes will likely be more of a conversation rather than a straight change this or we won’t accept your work, and there may be cases where we don’t have proposed changes and just accept your story outright.
Will you give us feedback if our story is not accepted?
At this time we will be giving feedback to every short story submitted, though it may not be extremely detailed. We will not be fully editing works we do not accept, but we’ll try to give you an idea of why you weren’t accepted and how to improve your story. We’re not going to make jokes at your story’s expense. We will also tell you if your short story is simply not a good fit for us. We will not be sending out feedback until after the deadline.
When will I hear back about my submission?
You will hear from us after the deadline has passed. As of right now, we’re hoping to reply to everyone within one month after the deadline. We will update this if it changes and post that we will need longer to our social media in that case.
Can I submit multiple times?
You can submit multiple different stories, but we can only accept one of your stories for each submission topic.
How many stories are you accepting for each topic?
While we don’t have a set number in mind, we are accepting a minimum of four stories.
